Storytelling Our Way to Health Equity

Have you ever had a hard time . . .

· Getting a doctor to listen to you and understand?

· Providing your children with the security and stability they deserve?

· Being treated with respect in a health care setting?

If so, join this summer’s Worcester Clemente Storytelling Circle and use your story to contribute to the fight for health equity.

On 6 Mondays in June and July we will meet from 6:00-7:30 (in person or by Zoom) to transform our personal experiences into powerful testimonies about the ways race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, immigration status, and ethnicity affect our ability to be healthy and get good healthcare. Assumption University Professor Lucia Knoles will lead the discussions and provide one-on-one support for participants.

The stories we write for the course will be published in an anthology alongside stories from Worcester doctors who are also committed to the fight for health equity.

Free copies of our book will be provided to area medical schools, nursing schools, and pharmacy schools as well as to state and local officials involved in planning for community health. And if any groups are interested in hosting discussions, we hope to schedule public readings.

So if you are a Clemente alum—or if you have been accepted into the 2024-25 Worcester Clemente Course in the Humanities, apply now to join us this summer. Improve your reading and writing skills. Connect with others in the Clemente community. Share your own stories; learn by listening to the life stories of others. And join the fight against health inequality by helping to educate the next generation of healthcare workers.
