How the course works.
Real college credit, free of charge. You do not need a high school diploma to start. If you are an adult in the Worcester area who loves to read and think, this course is for you.
Who can apply.
The course is built for adults who want a real college experience but who have not had the chance to start—or who have started but not finished.
You are older than 17.
You can read a newspaper in English.
Your household income is no higher than 150% of the federal poverty level.
You are willing to commit to several months of the course and to do the required work.
You live in the Worcester area, or can get to the Worcester Art Museum.
You need a high school diploma or GED.
You can come two evenings a week, September through May.

What you’ll study.
Five subjects, taught by college faculty across the year. You read the real thing and talk about it together.
Literature and Poetry
Consider how poems are made and what they speak to us, sharing insights with one another to explore why some poems move us so deeply.
U.S. History
Learn about our nation's history and discover how our study of the past influences our understanding of the present moment.
Philosophy
Explore the most fundamental questions about truth, beauty, justice, and the good while examining your own beliefs about what is good, what is valuable, and what is just.
Art History
Analyze the cultural meaning and social contexts that influence the making of art and the uses of art across different eras; tour the galleries at the Worcester Art Museum.
Critical Thinking and Writing
Connect your own ideas to the topics we discuss and debate; put your thoughts into writing to gain clarity and inspiration.
Two evenings a week, September to May.
Classes meet at the Worcester Art Museum, with community dinners and special events alongside them, so you always have the support of friends. The practical things people worry about are already handled.

Before you apply.
Is it really free?
Yes. Tuition, books, tablet-style computers, and the children’s program during class are all covered. You pay nothing.
What if I haven't been in school for years?
That is true for most students here. The course is built for adults coming back to a classroom, and you will be in good company.
Are the credits real?
Yes. Bard College is fully accredited, and you can earn up to 6 college credits. Credits are awarded for work that meets the required standard, not for attendance alone.
What if I have to miss a class?
Tell your instructor and we work with you. Steady attendance matters for the credits, but life happens and we know it.
What if I need accommodations?
Let us know what you need, on the form or during your follow-up talk, and we will arrange it.
